Super Mario 3D Land or: How I Learned to Stop Putzing and Play the Damn Game
For someone who loves video games, I’ve gotten pretty terrible at actually playing them for the past several months. Longer, even. Maybe years if you don’t count Pokémon games.
I still follow the gaming industry religiously. I keep up with all the news, both in the US and in Japan. (I’m putting that Japanese degree of mine to good use.) I keep an eye on sales and new releases lists and grab titles that interest me as the opportunity arises.
So I still buy new games. But then…I barely play most of them.
This is largely just a personality flaw of mine—I’m the same way with books. I accumulate a bunch, can’t ever decide which one to focus on, and in my indecision I end up just watching let’s plays or browsing Reddit.
My new personal little gaming project to try to kickstart my game-playing motivation really starts back at the basics: Mario.
I picked up Super Mario 3D Land the day it came out, over 3 months ago now. How far have I made it since then? Somewhere in the middle of world 2.
I realize this is pitiful, and I take most of the responsibility. (I do put some blame on Mario Kart 7 for coming out not too long after this and distracting me.) But I’ve been watching enough various Donkey Kong-related LP’s lately that I’m getting that itch to play a platformer again, so I thought: this is the perfect time for me to sit down with this unduly neglected Mario game.
So here’s my “game” plan (pun not intended, I swear): play at least one level a day. That’s all. Baby steps. I’m hoping I’ll sometimes do an extra level or two, and that I’ll naturally expand back into something resembling normal gaming sessions rather than just putzing around for 10 or so minutes before drifting back to the toxic lure of the internet.
I did my first level last night, as well as collecting a bunch of StreetPass goodies that had accumulated in the game that I wasn’t even aware of. (Star coins? 1-ups? Gimme!) So far so good. I forgot how polished and generally awesome Super Mario 3D Land is. It’s just such a well put together game. Good use of 3D too. Perhaps I’m enamored again after all.
Yes yes yes yes. I want these in my cubicle.
I really need to make a real blog one of these days.
This is how I hit the gym.
